Arica

(Monday 18 April 2011) by Mike and Julie's sort of round the world trip
Day 245 4/9/11
I skipped the hotel’s wonderful instant coffee and piece of bread breakfast and walked to the bus station and got a 9:30 bus to Arica. I decided I would give El Gigante a pass – I have plans to see geogyphics in Peru anyways. I got into Arica at 2:30 and checking around found lots of buses going to La Paz including one at midnight that night. I wasn’t up to spending ten hours in the bus station so I got a ticket at 8:30 the next morning and headed off to a hostel nearby. It was a reasonable $20 with a shared bathroom and nice people that gave me some juice and cake upon checking in.
I didn’t see much of the town. There were beaches a block or two away and I understand its popular with surfers. I did take a picture of a large soccer ball just so I would have something for this post.
I had a good pollo asada meal at a local joint and picked up some snacks for the ride tomorrow. I thought I would rest up but there was a concert somewhere nearby. The hostel is behind a shopping center and while there are a few houses nearby it’s mainly unincorporated land. The music was incredibly loud and started at nine o’clock and went on until six in the morning. Even with earplugs I could hear it. I did get some sleep though and had a good breakfast for a change before heading out to the bus station.
