Paris Day One

(Monday 30 August 2010) by Mike and Julie's sort of round the world trip
Day 15 – 8/19/10 Paris
We took a night bus from near the hotel to the train station with no problems. Julie slept (surprise) most of the way to Paris and we bought a carnet (book of 10 metro passes) from the metro and got quickly to the hotel. There was no immigration so I suppose our exit stamp from London will serve as the beginning of our 90 days in Europe.
Our room wasn’t ready at My Hotel In France, so we left our bags there and took a walk around. We’re quite a bit from the town center so we walked among the shops familiarizing ourselves with the area around the hotel. Julie had some roasted chicken that a butcher shop was selling and we made our way back to the hotel to unpack and freshen up.
We decided to visit the Louvre although there was quite a line and it was extremely hot. Julie had graciously passed her cold on to me so I am not in top form in the pictures as you can see. The Louvre is huge and I wish we had more time to explore it – there were sections we entirely skipped – and I wish I was in better spirits to enjoy it. Its 9.50 Euros to enter the museum and you get a lot of bang for your buck. Julie went crazy with pictures of the art as she had seen pictures of many of the pieces in her art class. Obviously the stars are Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo but there are many other wonderful pieces.

I spied a Ferris wheel on leaving the Louvre and thinking it might be another site from the Amazing Race (season one) we walked to it. Got some pictures but I will have to compare to my video to see if it the “Grand Rue” from the show.

I was really dragging with my cold and early wake up for the train, so we went back to the hotel to shower and take a nap. I wanted to take a river cruise down the Seine and found a company that left at 9PM so we woke up about 7 PM and left the hotel about a quarter to 8 PM.
Unfortunate our timing wasn’t good on the subway as we were just missing our trains. Also the final train did not stop at the station we needed, a change which wasn’t shown on the older maps we had gotten, so we had to walk from a station past our intended target. The result was us waving goodbye to the ship at 9PM when we arrived at the ticket office. Oh well, looks like we’ll do that tomorrow night!
