On the road to Portugal

(Friday 10 September 2010) by Mike and Julie's sort of round the world trip
Day 30 – 9/3/10 Santiago de Compostela & Porto
We left around 7 AM in the dark. Garmin again tricked us and we missed a turn. Rather than making a simple U-turn we actually went quite a ways on small streets barely big enough for our car before joining a major street. Julie was able to nap a bit while I caught glimpse of the Atlantic a bit off the road.
We arrived in Santiago with basically no clue as to what to do. I pulled into paid parking with no idea how much it would cost. We visited the Cathedral there after waiting a bit for the noon pilgrim mass to finish.
There was suppose to be a gigantic Thurber swinging like a pendulum inside but I guess they had taken it down. The inside was nice but I think we were starting to get burned out on cathedrals. We walked around a bit afterwards before getting back in to the car. Garmin said we’d arrive a little after 4 PM and so at 2 PM we left. I began to eye the Garmin suspiciously when it indicated we’d arrive in half an hour when the signs indicated Porto was still over 100k away. We soon realized that Portugal was an hour behind Spain!
Hotel America was not in the best part of Porto but it had secure parking and a quick walk took us into a friendlier portion of town. We got something to eat and then headed back to the hotel to plan out the next day.
